Can anyone give me info on the area such as the builder, weather, traffic, convenience to shopping, flooding, etc. I adore Southport and lived there for several years as a child. It's a small fishing village or at least used to be, but it is still small south of Wilmington. Most shopping will be in Wilmington. Southport is about 30 minutes south of Wilmington. It's quicker to drive to Wilmington, but I recommend taking the ferry once in awhile if you have the time for it. And the weather is cooperative. They're supposed to be putting a new state port there. I'm not sure what that will do to Southport or to its population. As far as weather, I hope your cousin will be prepared to deal with hurricanes. I've never seen the town leveled by a storm, but that doesn't mean it will never happen. What is southport like of the annoying traffic is in the area leading to Oak Island. I can't remember the names of the roads, but it's where the few chain restaurants and stores are located. There are several developments that have started and gotten nowhere. Frankly, I think people would be nuts to buy into a new development in these areas. There are established areas and developments that are very nice and offer no risk and the area is way underpriced. Don't buy in new undeveloped developments where you could get scorched. This particular development is pretty much out in the middle of nowhere. It is 15 miles from Southport and over 20 miles from Wilmington with no convenient grocery stores, stores, restaurants or anything near by. Maybe Dominos delivers out there but it will be cold. Otherwise you are in for a 40 minute back and forth drive. The nuke plant is a non-issue for this dev as it is over 20 miles away. The nuke plant is near Southport. Southport is a pretty town but the city government has been selling out or is so inept that they have been quickly letting it go. The builder who went bankrupt put a couple of three story condos on the end of the historic town pier -- so much for quaint. Still the town still has lots of victorians, Live oaks and pines. Recently and inexplicably over 25 mature pines were knocked down next to the hospital ruining the first pretty site that you see going into Southport. So, as I said, the city government what is southport like letting the place go. Hopefully, these people will be voted out and the city will gain competent management that can save what is southport like beauty of the town. The big problem with buying into Southport proper however is the potential for this new port. That would be a disaster and appears to be going to happen. The city government is failing the town and the port would be an awful thing. But again, if you live outside of town in Smythville Woods, Walden Creek or Winding Creek, then you are on a marsh, and won't have to deal with the issues above. Don't buy in a new unpopulated development. As a transplant from New England I can tell you that it reminds me of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It is a small fishing town but it has a number of small specialty shops. The beaches close by are small and never crowded and it is a great place for a vacation.
